Abstract

The K-pop group BTS has achieved remarkable global progress and success, producing high-quality cultural and artistic products that have exerted significant cultural and educational influence on the global community, particularly on adolescents and young adults. In the present study, using a document analysis approach and based on library research as well as field studies of BTS fans, the components of BTS’s cultural identity power and its identity-reinforcing elements—also possessing educational orientations and effects—were analyzed. These include content transmission practices, content-related components, performance components, and artistic techniques. The study also examined the reasons and underlying causes for the use of these components, noting that in K-pop such strategies draw upon practices of idolization, emotional interaction and exchange, message delivery, identity formation, and community building-forms and levels of the broader two-way culture of star-making, fandom, and fan devotion. Through these, cognitive or motivational messages, such as hope for life and perseverance, are conveyed within the themes of songs and products, alongside the symbolic representation of stars, for educational purposes directed at fans and audiences. A significant portion of the cultural and educational success of K-pop is attributed to performance programs such as group-based and quasi-family activities, constant and comprehensive interaction, an extensive talent identification and training system, and a particular focus on artistic and media techniques—namely variety, visual imagery, attractiveness, and the dynamic energy present in dance. Overall, K-pop in general, and BTS in particular, extensively employ educational approaches in pursuit of cultural and educational objectives.
