An Examination of the Typology of Communicative Action in the Thought and Practice of Hazrat Fatimah al-Zahra (SA)

Abstract

The present research seeks to present a framework serving as a classification and typology of communicative action in the thought and practice of Hazrat Fatimah Zahra (Peace Be Upon Her). The outcome of such a framework is the illustration of the actions reflected in the historical text of the sermons (khotbah-hā) of Hazrat Fatimah Zahra (PBUH) and Her practical conduct (sīrah-ye 'amalī), for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of the social, political, and historical conditions. The application of new linguistic theories in the analysis of religious texts opens new horizons before researchers and reveals the hidden deep structures of speech. Among these linguistic theories is Habermas's Theory of Communicative Action. The results of this research, which was conducted with the objective of tracing the typology of communicative action in the thought and practice of Hazrat Fatimah Zahra (PBUH) using the documentary study method, indicate that three main themes—namely, the use of constative/assertive actions, the unique capacity-building of representative/expressive actions, and the provision of a dialogue platform (through discourse-constitutive actions—are extensively and significantly reflected in the sermons, narrations, and conduct (sīrah) of Hazrat Fatimah Zahra (PBUH) and encompass numerous sub-themes; furthermore, for Her constative/assertive and representative/expressive speech acts, these are communicative/consensual and emancipatory actions against the strategic action of the rulers' domination (saltanat).
