An Examination of the Identity Formation Challenges of the Contemporary Dual-Spaced Iranian Adolescent

Abstract

Adolescent identity formation is one of the most important and challenging stages of life, wherein the individual strives to define their place in the surrounding world. Today, with the expansion of virtual space, adolescents live simultaneously in two life-worlds: the indigenous life-world and the virtual life-world. Consequently, adolescents increasingly face crises such as conflict (ta'āroż), doubt (tardīd), and identity confusion. The importance of this issue lies in the fact that stable identity formation lays the foundation for the mental health and social success of adolescents and paves the way for the country's progress; thus, understanding its challenges is essential for designing effective educational and cultural interventions. This research, using a qualitative method and thematic analysis, has delved into the identity formation challenges of Iranian adolescents. The findings indicate that the most significant identity formation challenges for adolescents are: the difficulty in manifesting adolescent characteristics within the context of the virtual space; undesirable virtual lifestyle and behavior patterns; the virtualized communication system of adolescents; and the prevalent psychological and moral harms among adolescents. These challenges, collectively, have paved the way for profound identity crises in adolescents.
